MIDDLE EAST CONCERN

A network of concerned Christians
involved in assisting the Church in the Middle East and North Africa
when it faces discrimination or persecution.

What Does MEC do?

Assists persecuted Christians in the Middle East (see map below) through the following activities:

  1. Assisting victims in specific cases of persecution through prayer, publicity, advocacy, and where appropriate, relocation to a place of refuge.

  2. Helping Middle Eastern Christians to practice their faith freely and enjoy full religious liberty in their respective countries through projects that address structural discrimination and persecution.

  3. Training Christians in biblical principles of persecution and in practical ways of preparing for and reacting to it.

In 2005 MEC advocated for or otherwise assisted Christians who were arrested or suffered other abuses in over a hundred cases in Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Through its seminar programme MEC continues to build up the capability of indigenous peoples to react wisely and proactively to the abuse of Human Rights in the region. MEC runs several seminars for Christian leaders and lawyers on a variety of issues in countries throughout the region.

MEC is also involved in the planned establishment of a network of legal committees in each country to assist and advise victims of persecution. The organization is also involved in conducting proactive research into the underlying causes of persecution across the region covered in an effort to relieve the pressures that may lead to outbreaks of persecution.

H is an Iranian Muslim convert. He was arrested while attending a Christian meeting and after being held for almost six months was formally charged with apostasy. International attention to the case led to his acquittal. He is reported to be physically, emotionally, and spiritually well, and is allowed a three-day home visit each month. His wife and two teenage children are being supported by fellow Christians. MEC has continued to issue prayer requests, press releases and to be involved in advocacy.

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners,
and those who are mistreated
as if you yourselves were suffering.
(Hebrews 13:3)

"Middle East Concern is an organization that is highly appreciated by the churches in the Middle East. From experience I know that [they] defend the rights of Christians and assist them in practical ways as well. MEC has a unique ministry in one of the most rapidly-changing spiritual situations that I know of.”
